Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Madeline studied literature and creative writing at Bard College. Since 2000 she has lived in Barcelona, Spain where she has worked as an editor, translator, cultural manager, and political aide. She served as senior adviser and speechwriter to three Catalan ministers of culture and now writes about current politics and culture in Catalonia and Spain.
Madeline’s fiction has been supported by grants from Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference in Vermont and the Edward Albee Foundation in New York. In 2019 she was a fellow in fiction at Hawthornden in Scotland and in political philosophy at the Faber Residency in Olot, Spain.
